Certificate of Citizenship

Basic Requirements:

Under the Child Citizenship Act of 2000, a child obtains automatic citizenship if ALL of the following was true prior to his/her 18th birth date:

  • Is still under the age of 18, or was under age 18 on or before February 27, 2001,
  • Be in the custody of at least one parent, who is a U.S. citizen,
  • Is a US permanent resident (green card holder) residing in the U.S.,
  • If adopted, had a full and final adoption.

Such a child (or an adult who was at one time such a child) can obtain a certificate of citizenship to prove that he/she is a U.S. Citizen.

Application Process:

The following is a typical procedure to obtain certificate of citizenship as evidence of U.S. Citizenship. After filing the certificate of citizenship application, the applicant must appear at the designated US CIS office for an interview and to pick up his/her certificate of citizenship. If the applicant is still a minor, then his U.S. Citizen parent must also appear at the designated US CIS office. Unlike the naturalization process, the applicant is NOT required to take an English Test or Government and History Test. The applicant is also NOT required to take an oath during a naturalization ceremony.

The following is the attorney’s fee that the Law Office of William Jang, PLLC charges for a typical case of this type when filed in the United States at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (US CIS) (please read the disclaimer on this page) and the filing fee currently charged by US Citizenship and Immigration Service (US CIS):
