Visa Options for Siblings of U.S. Citizens

Family members can be given special family-based immigration status to immigrate to the United States. For instance, a U.S. citizen can petition for his or her mother and father to be allowed entry to the country, as well as his or her spouse and children. The same is true for a U.S. citizen’s brothers and sisters, though they have to go through a slightly different process to be admitted to the country. The FB-4 visa is a family-based immigrant visa that allows brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens to move to the U.S. permanently.

About the FB-4 Visa

The FB-4 visa is the fourth preference category for family-based immigration to the U.S. Any U.S. citizen who is age 21 or older may sponsor a brother or sister for the FB-4. The U.S. citizen sibling must first petition on behalf of the brother or sister to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). Once the USCIS receives the petition and processes it, it will give an estimated future date at which time the brother or sister may apply for an available visa.

Each year, 65,000 FB-4 visas are granted. Unfortunately, there are many people who apply for these visas who do not receive them, or who are put on a wait list. The wait time for an FB-4 visa depends on the applicant’s country of origin, but can often take about 10 years. Once a foreign sibling is able to apply and completes his or her petition to the U.S., he or she may be granted permanent resident status to live and work in the United States.
