Preparing for Your Naturalization Exam

There are many people who are interested in becoming citizens of the United States through the process of naturalization. In order to receive US citizenship, a person must prove to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services that they meet all eligibility requirements. What You Should Know About the Exam

After filling out an application, you may be able to schedule your interview and examination time. The test will include a:

  • Reading Portion – A short passage is selected and applicants are asked to read aloud to prove that they can read English.
  • Writing Portion – Applicants are asked to transcribe a sentence to prove their familiarity with the English language and alphabet.
  • Speaking Portion – A United States Citizenship and Immigration Services officer will ask the applicant questions about their background in order to decide whether or not they have the desired level of English fluency.
  • Civics Exam – 6 of 10 questions about United States civics must be answered correctly to pass this portion of the exam. The questions used in the test are selected from a list of 100 possible questions.
