An Introduction to the Au Pair Program

There are many ways for responsible young people from around the world to live, study, and work in the United States. One exciting option is the au pair program. In this program, administered by the U.S. Department of State, young visitors from abroad become a member of an American host family for one or two years and earn an income by working in the home. To apply, you must meet certain qualifications and apply for a J-1 visa.

The helpful legal staff of the Law Office of William Jang, PLLC, is pleased to help young individuals fulfill their dreams of living in the United States. Our Austin J-1 visa/status attorneys may be able to help you submit a strong au pair application, so do not hesitate to contact us at 512-323-2333.

Requirements for Au Pair Applicants

The au pair program matches qualified young applicants from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas with host families in the United States. Au pairs are expected to meet certain standards and fulfill certain responsibilities while in the U.S., so the application process is strenuous and detailed. The following list of requirements applies to the majority of prospective au pairs:

  • Au pairs must be between 18 and 26 years of age
  • English-language competency is a necessity for prospective au pairs
  • Au pairs should have the equivalent of a secondary-level education
  • Individuals with criminal records are excluded from the au pair program
  • If the au pair’s homestay family has a child under two years of age, the au pair must have childcare experience

If each of these requirements is met, an applicant may begin the process of becoming an au pair. As an au pair, you may be required to perform childcare and other household duties for your host family. In return, your host family will pay you a set wage, provide vacation time, and cover many of your necessary expenses. Many au pairs spend up to two years in the United States living, working, and completing academic credits.
