Although fewer Mexicans are coming to American and more are leaving, those who choose to cross the border are doing so legally. About 50 percent of Mexican immigrants enter the country legally, significantly more than the ten percent in 2000.

Most Mexican immigrants come on family reunification visas, which allows immigrants with family or spouses with permanent residence or U.S. citizenship to enter. Nearly 90,000 came last year on H-visas, or employment-based visas.

More Mexicans than ever before are coming on EB-5 visas, which requires a $500,000 to $1 million investment in a U.S. company and the creation of at least ten U.S. jobs.

If you are trying to get your family to U.S. through family preference immigrant visas, contact the immigration attorneys from the Law Office of William Jang, PLLC today at 512-323-2333.

Six U.S. senators have recently written to the Department of Labor on behalf of frustrated domestic farmers who claim the federal H-2A visa program, which provides visas for seasonal agriculture workers, has become too complicated for them to follow the legal guidelines.

Employers report that they must complete complicated paperwork and go through several federal agencies to hire a legal foreign worker. The six senators listed several instances in their letter of unnecessary administrative delays that resulted in underemployment on farms.

In a written statement, the Assistant Labor Secretary said the department has revamped its website, created a ombudsmen program, and updated an employer handbook to make the process more efficient.

According to data from the Pew Hispanic Center, the population of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States dropped last year for the first time in decades. Many who came to the country illegally are now leaving to return to Mexico after finding few job opportunities.

In 2011, the illegal Mexican immigration population was around 6.1 million, down from 2007′s peak of 7 million. Net immigration between Mexico and the United States is also at a standstill as 1.4 million Mexicans returned home between 2005-2010 and 1.4 million left for the states.

Not only are fewer Mexicans entering the U.S. and more are leaving, but 20 percent of illegal immigrants deported back to Mexico say they will not try to come back, compared to 7 percent in 2005.

A 22 year-old man was declared dead shortly after arriving at University Medical Center Brackenridge just after 2 am this morning. According to authorities, the man had lost his balance and fell under the bus shortly after getting off.

Witnesses say the man was acting very intoxicated and had to be helped by a friend to stand up. The bus had picked them up downtown. The two friends got off the bus in front of the University Estates apartment complex just off of Riverside.

It is not clear if the man was a student at UT. This is the second pedestrian death involving a Capital Metro bus in its history; its first occurred earlier this year.

India and the United States are consulting at the World Trade Organization after India filed an official complaint about the high cost of U.S. visas. The country claims that the fees discriminate against Indian IT firms. Consultations are a last resort before legal action is taken.

The law India is particularly unhappy with is a 2010 bill that nearly doubled visa fees for skilled workers to $4,500 per applicant. The government believes the fees are a barrier to trade, and the issue has been brought to the attention of U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson during his visit last month.

Senator Charles Schumer, the sponsor of the U.S. bill, says the law was passed in 2010 to stop certain small companies from exploiting laws to import foreign workers.

In the largest government sweep of its kind, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested more than 3,100 immigrants who were in the country illegally and had been convicted of serious crimes and considered threats to national security.

ICE officials specifically targeted immigrants who either crossed the border illegally or who had violated their legal status as immigrants. Criminals from over 116 countries were arrested in the sweep that took place in every state over six days.

More than a third of the people arrested had more than one criminal conviction. The most severe cases included sex crimes against minors, manslaughter, drug trafficking, murder, and gang affiliations.

It was announced on Friday that Syrians living in the United States will be allowed to stay beyond their visas in order to avoid the current violence overseas. The Department of Homeland Security will assigns Syrians currently in the U.S. temporary protected status.

Before applicants can be accepted under the temporary protected status, they must undergo full criminal background checks. Any individual with a criminal background or who is seen as a threat to national security will not be eligible for temporary protected status.

It is estimated that about 2,500 to 3,000 people will be affected by the change. This status does not lead to lawful permanent residence.

The family of a Pakistani man who was killed four days after the 9/11 terror attacks by a white supremacist became American citizens last week. The 46 year-old father of four was shot and killed on September 15, 2001 in Dallas by a man admittedly out for revenge for 9/11.

His wife, 45, and his three adult daughters were sworn in as U.S. citizens in New Jersey after more than a decade following their emigration from Pakistan. The family faced deportation after the man’s death since their visas were tied to his.

Representative Rush Holt stopped the deportation process in 2004 by introducing a private bill in Congress that granted them legal resident status.

Thousands of students have protested outside of North Miami High School after learning that their class valedictorian may be deported. Friends have created a Facebook page and an online petition, which as garnered over 5000 signatures, to keep her in the country.

The valedictorian, who came to the United States with her family from Colombia when she was four years-old, is fighting to appeal a judge’s decision that denied her request for relief from deportation. ICE has said it will not take action against the student as she fights for the appeal.
