Angry protests result in cancellation of “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game” at UT

The “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game,” spearheaded by the Young Conservatives of Texas chapter at the University of Texas, scheduled for Wednesday, November 18 was cancelled after it was met with angry protests all over the country. The fallout from the media attention the group and “game” received is now a concern of republican politicians in the state.

Immigration issues are a major issue in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor candidacy, with candidates Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, Texas Senator Dan Patrick, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, and State Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples all aiming to repeal the Texas DREAM Act, a state law that enables students taken to Texas illegally as children to obtain in-state university tuition.

Democratic candidate state senator Leticia van de Putte, who filed for candidacy for lieutenant governor  during the last week of November, said “the Texas DREAM Act…which has been in effect for 12 years…is misguided in its focus.”
