H-2A visa program frustrates domestic growers

Posted on May 8th, 2012 No Comments

Six U.S. senators have recently written to the Department of Labor on behalf of frustrated domestic farmers who claim the federal H-2A visa program, which provides visas for seasonal agriculture workers, has become too complicated for them to follow the legal guidelines.

Employers report that they must complete complicated paperwork and go through several federal agencies to hire a legal foreign worker. The six senators listed several instances in their letter of unnecessary administrative delays that resulted in underemployment on farms.

In a written statement, the Assistant Labor Secretary said the department has revamped its website, created a ombudsmen program, and updated an employer handbook to make the process more efficient.
