Population of Mexican immigrants drastically drop

Posted on April 24th, 2012 No Comments

According to data from the Pew Hispanic Center, the population of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States dropped last year for the first time in decades. Many who came to the country illegally are now leaving to return to Mexico after finding few job opportunities.

In 2011, the illegal Mexican immigration population was around 6.1 million, down from 2007’s peak of 7 million. Net immigration between Mexico and the United States is also at a standstill as 1.4 million Mexicans returned home between 2005-2010 and 1.4 million left for the states.

Not only are fewer Mexicans entering the U.S. and more are leaving, but 20 percent of illegal immigrants deported back to Mexico say they will not try to come back, compared to 7 percent in 2005.
