It was announced on Friday that Syrians living in the United States will be allowed to stay beyond their visas in order to avoid the current violence overseas. The Department of Homeland Security will assigns Syrians currently in the U.S. temporary protected status.

Before applicants can be accepted under the temporary protected status, they must undergo full criminal background checks. Any individual with a criminal background or who is seen as a threat to national security will not be eligible for temporary protected status.

It is estimated that about 2,500 to 3,000 people will be affected by the change. This status does not lead to lawful permanent residence.
