Thousands of students have protested outside of North Miami High School after learning that their class valedictorian may be deported. Friends have created a Facebook page and an online petition, which as garnered over 5000 signatures, to keep her in the country.

The valedictorian, who came to the United States with her family from Colombia when she was four years-old, is fighting to appeal a judge’s decision that denied her request for relief from deportation. ICE has said it will not take action against the student as she fights for the appeal.

The teenager says she wants to become a heart surgeon and has already applied to several Ivy League universities. She became valedictorian of a class of more than 800 students.
