LA County sheriff backs issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants

Posted on February 28th, 2012 No Comments

L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca announced last week that he would support a plan to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants if they fill out a comprehensive application similar to citizenship applications.

Baca would only back the plan if the illegal immigrants have lived in the country for several years and have an otherwise clean criminal history. Earlier last week, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck also announced that he would back a similar plan because it would reduce hit-and-run accidents.

Beck believes hit-and-runs will drop because illegal immigrants will not have to fear being caught by police. Baca previously supported a similar plan nearly a decade ago, but it failed to gain support.
