Hundreds protest Alabama immigration law

Posted on February 14th, 2012 No Comments

Several hundred people rallied outside the Alabama State House in Montgomery this afternoon to protest House Bill 56, the state’s immigration law that passed last year.

The protestors hope the state’s lawmakers will repeal the law, which many say is unconstitutional. Opponents claim that the 40,000 to 80,000 undocumented workers in Alabama help the local governments because they spend their income in the state.

The director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama estimates the law will cause a reduction of gross domestic product from $2.3 billion to $10.8 billion. Under the law, it is a punishable crime that includes jail time for an illegal immigrant to even be in Alabama.
