Federal appeals court stops deportations of 7 immigrants

In a 2-1 ruling this week, a federal appeals court halted the deportation of seven immigrants, putting the Obama administration’s new immigration order to the test.

Last June, a memo sent by the director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement urged prosecutors to use discretion when pursuing immigration cases. The Obama administration has stressed the deportation of individuals in the country illegally who are a direct threat to society, such as gang members, drug offenders, and violent criminals rather than on students, pregnant women, and illegal immigrants with no other prior offenses.

The seven illegal immigrants in question do not appear to have prior criminal histories. However, some lawmakers argue that the judges’ decision to call off their deportation goes beyond their judicial authority.
