Some immigrants wait decades for citizenship

Posted on October 24th, 2011 No Comments

The wave of immigrants coming to the United States has been growing bigger and bigger, and as the government puts smaller and smaller caps on immigration visas, some immigrants are experiencing double-digit waiting periods.

Immigrants with desired skills like a college education, wealth, or family living in America usually wait less than those without these added benefits, but can still wait more than ten years before receiving a permanent visa.

The government caps family-based immigration visas at 226,000 a year; work-based immigration visas are capped at 140,000. An immigrant with a relative living in the U.S. who files a F4 visa petition can expect to wait 23 years before the application is processed. F4 visas are capped at 65,000  a year.
