The Diversity Immigrant Visa
The Diversity Immigrant Visa program is also known as “the Green Card Lottery,” because it is a federally mandated lottery program for countries with low annual immigration rates to the United States. People from these areas are given the opportunity to apply for a United States Permanent Resident Card (or Green Card), and the available cards are then divided between applicants based on their countries of origin.
If you are interested in filing for the Green Card Lottery, the Austin immigration attorneys of the Law Office of William Jang, PLLC may be able to help you. To learn more, please contact us today by calling 512-323-2333.
Understanding the Program
Every year, 50,000 Green Cards are made available to applicants of the Diversity Immigrant Visa program – a small number, given that as many as 14 million people apply for the program every year. Under the program, about 100,000 applications are accepted, and interviews and other factors whittle this number away to achieve the 50,000 accepted immigrants. The breakdown of allocated visas is as follows:
- Africa – 52.63% of available visas
- Europe – 29.04% of available visas
- Asia – 14.62% of available visas
- South America, Central America, and the Caribbean – 1.93% of available visas
- Oceania – 1.76% of available visas
- North America – 0.02% of available visas
Additionally, there are a number of countries that are ineligible for the lottery.
