Naturalization Test and Interview
Many citizens of countries outside the United States want to become U.S. citizens through the process of naturalization. When applying for naturalization, you must successfully demonstrate your knowledge of U.S. history and government in addition to fluency in English. This must be done in the presence of an officer from the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. Study materials for the tests are available for free online, at public libraries, or at educational institutions.
Naturalization Tests
During your naturalization interview, a USCIS Officer will ask you questions about your application and background. The following list contains a basic explanation of each of the various tests to which you must submit:
- Speaking Test: A USCIS officer will interview you, asking questions about your background and your application to determine your ability to speak English.
- Reading Test: You must read aloud one of three sentences correctly to demonstrate your ability to read in English.
- Writing Test: You must correctly write one out of three sentences to show your ability to write in English.
- Civics Test: You will be asked 10 questions from the provided list of 100 civics questions. You must be able to answer 6 out of 10 of these questions correctly.
For each application you file, you have two chances to pass all of the tests. If you fail a portion of the test, you must retake it within 90 days.
