Green Cards and Traveling Abroad

A United States Permanent Resident Card –also known as a green card – is the document that allows a foreign national to legally live and work in the United States. For many green-card holders, family, friends, and work opportunities still require them to travel abroad. Understanding the process of re-entering the United States following an international trip is very important.

If you or someone you love has a green card and is planning on traveling outside of the country, the Austin immigration attorneys of the Law Office of William Jang, PLLC, may be able to help. To learn more about what we may be able to do for you, please contact us today by calling 512-323-2333.

The Re-Entry Permit

For most trips that take you outside of the United States, you will only need your green card to get back into the country. However, if the trip took you out of the country for longer than a year, a re-entry permit is required in addition to the permanent resident card. You may apply for a re-entry permit:

  • At a consulate abroad
  • Before departing the United States

Generally speaking, this permit will be good for two years after it is issued. However, it does not necessarily guarantee that you will be allowed to re-enter the United States.
